About us

Welcome to GMSMA

My name is Raymond Kaczmarek and I began training in martial arts as a 21 year old, It was 2001 when I first walked into the Dojang, this is where I first met GM Sutherland and I’ve never looked back. My passion is helping people of all ages into Martial Arts, as starting Taekwon-Do literally changed my life.

At Grand Master Sutherland’s Martial Arts we have over 45 years of experience in helping 1000s of students take up martial arts. Grand Master Sutherland was promoted to Master rank by Taekwondo founder, General Choi. She was awarded the outstanding instructor award from General Choi in Malaysia and our highly qualified team of instructors work hard to keep up her legacy.

We are the longest running martial gym in West Lothian and we strive to provide the best possible martial arts and fitness training in a fun and safe environment. Our classes are tailored for all ages and levels of fitness, from our popular kid’s martial arts classes through to our Adult Beginner and Ladies Only Classes. We cater for everyone from the complete beginner to World Champion.

My son started with little ninjas Livingston in December. He was very shy and lacked in confidence when participating although he wanted to do it. With perseverance from us, and the fantastic instructors who helped encourage him he now loves it and is doing great. Little ninjas is fun while also providing discipline, fitness and teaching self defence. Highly recommend.

I started at gmsma around 6 months ago now as I was basically looking to get my fitness back up and as I used to do a bit of martial arts 10 years ago I minded it was a great workout. Since going, with the instructors and everyone at the club making you feel welcome and part of the family as such my attitude to the classes as completely changed. I am now going because yes it is a great workout but the skills we are learning not only in the physical side but the everyday mental side such as just basic respect for your seniors in the group or manors that are lost in today's world is a great asset to help you succeed in life outside the classes. Am looking forward to many years in the club and would recommend it to anyone young or old.

My son started Tae Kwon Do at Bathgate gym aged 4, he is nearly 10 and daughter has been going for 2 years. They really enjoy it! The dedication, enthusiasm and support from the instructors is outstanding. I would highly recommend GMSMA to anyone wanting there children to try something new, they don’t just learn self defence. They learn respect, self discipline, improves focus, brings out there confidence and by doing all this have fun.

My 4 year old daughter attends the little ninja programe and what a difference this has made to not only her social skills but also for her concentration and discipline levels! The instructors are so thorough and take their time with all the children. They have fun along with learning new skills. My husband also attends the Taekwondo adult classes which he is loving and since January I have joined the ladies Kickboxing classes! These classes have given me the confidence in myself and puts me through my paces! All the instructors are so friendly and nothing is too much for them to help you on your journey, GMSMA have further stepped up their care for their students by offering online training during lockdown, which has allowed us all to keep up our training. Would recommend anybody to come along and join the family!

Throughout the lockdown and restricted movement of 2020, GMSMA have done everything possible to allow their students to continue their training and TKD journey. If you have always fancied trying a martial art then i 100% recommend GMSMA. Dont worry about age, i was an unfit 41 year old at the start of my journey and my wee one was only 3.

Don’t let anyone tell you Martial Arts is for youngsters. I started as a 51 year old and achieved my Black belt at 58. And I wasn’t even the oldest student!! Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t easy. But GMSMA students and Instructors in both Livingston and Bathgate gyms are like an extended family, with everyone, no matter what age or belt colour willing to help and assist others. I only wish I’d started Taekown-Do a lot earlier

I have always found this club to have a really nice atmosphere and they focus on every individual so they can achieve their goals to reach their potential. My son has been attending Little Ninjas for about a year and a half now and he absolutely loves it. We can see him growing in confidence & becoming more outgoing all the time. The instructors & assistants are second to none. They show patience and respect to every single student- no matter what age. They pull out all the stops to make the kids feel comfortable in the environment. After seeing my sons confidence grow & how much he enjoys the classes I was inspired to give kickboxing a go. At 43yrs old I never thought for a minute I’d begin this journey. I’ve now been going since January - even through lock down the online support was amazing! I love these classes and enjoy learning new skills and have met some great people! If martial arts has even crossed your mind- give it a go here. You’ll not look back ❤️

My son joined little ninjas during lockdown. The instructors are very professional and have a friendly, approachable and confident attitude. I really like how teaching even the ninjas they teach the same respect older kids would learn towards the instructors. Today was our first indoor session and it was absolutely fab, very well laid out and protocol explained. Totally different experience being indoors. My son thoroughly enjoys himself here and I can’t wait to see him progress. No matter how busy they are they’ve always responded to any queries/questions I’ve had pretty quickly 🙂

My daughter has been training in Tae Kwon Do at GMSMA for almost 12 years and is now a black belt. I started in the ladies only kickboxing class 18 months ago and absolutely love it. The instructors are really supportive and encouraging; even during lockdown they have kept going with Zoom and Facebook classes. I would never have thought that at the age of 41, I would be looking at going for my first grading but I am. Highly recommended for all ages. Once my grandson is older, I am sure I will be bringing him to classes as well.

Started here a year ago doing adult TKD and love it. The training is great and instruction is excellent. The hardest part is walking thru the door the 1st time, after that you can't wait for the next class. My 4 year old loves the Little Ninjas and the wife is really enjoying the womans kickboxing. As GMSMA has 2 gyms, there is always a class you can make, especially if you are a shift worker. Recommend 100%. Ps during this pandemic GMSMA have went above and beyond providing instructional videos, live classes and open channels to ensure everyone can continue training - true indomitable spirit.

Never thought at 52 yrs of age I would be doing kick boxing . I went along to the ladies group and was made so welcome and encouraged to do what I wanted to gain out of it. To pass my first grade was amazing, to say I was buzzing and throughout this lock down Mr K and his team of teaches have been awesome , they have achieved over and beyond to ensure all us students are getting what we require and need. Live sessions, to zoom and one to one , if working always time to catch up . Thank you Mr K and your teachers, absolutely awesome. You have taught me at my age nothing is impossible. So any ladies wondering , I would love to give this a try , then do so as I love it no matter what age you are. 🥊💕

Went to my First Ladies kickboxing class last week at Livingston and it was fantastic. Louise was fantastic along with the other teachers, it was a great atmosphere and brilliant group of ladies , I’m so excited to go again next week and finally to have found something I enjoy doing while keeping fit at the same time. 🙂 x
